Fraudsters be aware!!!!! This branch is scamming people. 40£ disappeared from my credit card 1 month later under the pretence of “handling fee”. Immediately called the bank to report fraud and got my money back. This is by far the worst car rental company I had to deal with in my life. Before i rented the vehicle the agent was trying to bully me into buying additional cover saying things like “if the vehicle breaks down you will be left on your own”. Seriously, avoid.

We made a reservation for our roadtrip and due to pick it up at the SIXT, EDINBURGH AIRPORT however return with such dismay and dissapointment to the service provided by the officer there, D.Taylor. Without no notification of the need to provide utility bills as to pay with debit card, he rudely sent us away from the counter. Without having an ounce of apologetic nor understanding he repeatedly said no and even told us to read the t and c provided. We are so angry for his bad service and lack of manners. We hope he can improve his services as it was early in the morning and we hate to start our journey with encountering rude people like him.

I’ve used Sixt four times, and have been happy with the vehicles and service, until now. However recently I returned a van, which was inspected and cleared. A week later, I received a damage report, and claim form, citing a chip on the Windscreen, where there had been none before.
I remembered that on collecting the van, the assistant had pointed out a chip, and it was indicated on the damage diagram
I challenged this by phoning the damage department, who checked with the local office. I was then told that the local branch had made a mistake!
I wonder how often this happens, and how often customers roll over and pay up.
I had also taken photos with my camera phone on collection, which were date stamped and clearly show a chip on the windscreen.
So, the take away lesson is:-

Available protection and coverage

Here is some general information regarding the different coverages available when you rent a car in the USA with Sixt. Be aware that some options are not offered in all states. Specific details of each protection plan can be found on their Rental Information page and in their Terms & Conditions.

  • Supplemental Liability Insurance increases the liability protection for claims made by a third party for bodily injury and/or property damages as a result of an accident while the renter is operating the rental vehicle.
  • Partial Damage Waiver removes the renter’s responsibility for the first USD 500.00 of damage to or loss of the vehicle. The customer will be held liable for any damage or loss exceeding the amount of USD 500.00. Partial Damage Waiver is not available in all states.
  • Loss Damage Waiver limits your liability for vehicle damage and theft to a specified excess.
  • Personal Accident Protection covers bodily injury to occupants of the rental vehicle.
  • Extended Roadside Protection (BC) will provide any renter with 24/7 breakdown assistance (where available) without any additional charge. It protects the renter against high service and repair costs for a variety of incidents.

 

Driver’s license

The renter and all drivers must present a valid original driver’s license upon pick up. Drivers in possession of a driver’s license from outside the US will need to present a valid passport or a valid government-issued ID card in addition to their driving license. EU citizens are only allowed to rent vehicles with up to 8 seats.

Driver’s licenses printed in a non-Roman Alphabet (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Cyrillic etc) must be complemented by an international driver’s permit. For driver’s licenses from countries not part of the international driver’s license treaty, an official translation of the license must be presented with the original license.

Age restrictions

With a small daily fee young drivers can benefit from their car rental deals across the US. Drivers must be at least 21 years of age and in possession of a driving license for at least one year. More information will be made available during the booking process.

Payment methods

Sixt rent a car accepts all major credit cards including American Express, Diners Club, Eurocard/MasterCard, Discover, Visa and Airplus. The name on the card must match that of the renter will need to presented upon collection of the rental vehicle. They do not accept any prepaid cards, Visa Electron Cards, electronic use only cards, Maestro Cards, checks or cash.

Refueling

You will be provided with a car rental with a full tank of gas, and will need to return the vehicle with a full tank to avoid extra charges. Sixt rent a car FAQs:

1. How old do I need to be to drive a rental vehicle?

  • The minimum to rent in the United States with SIXT is 21-24 years of age and held license for a minimum of 1 year.
  • If between the ages of 21 to 24 only the following categories can be rented – ECAR, CCAR, FCAR, ICAR, CFAR, IFAR, ILAE, ISAR, MBAR, MVAR. For an explanation of Sixt rent a car vehicle groups, please visit their fleet guide.
  • An Underage Driver Fee will apply for drivers under 25 years.

2. How long do I need to have held my driver’s license for to rent with Sixt?

All drivers (including any additional drivers) have to be in possession / have held a “valid” driver’s license for a minimum of 12 months to rent with Sixt in the United States.

 

IMPORTANT – Further restrictions apply dependent on driver age and type of vehicle required.  Please refer to the FAQ’s on ‘Rules and Regulations – Question 1 ‘How old do I need to be to drive a hire vehicle?’ for further information.

3. What proof of identification (ID) / documentation do I need to bring with me when collecting the vehicle?

  • A valid driver’s license for all named drivers, valid for a minimum of 12 months. Driver’s licenses printed in non-Roman alphabet (Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, etc.) must be accompanied by an international driver’s license. Any driver’s license originating from countries not part of the international driver’s license treaty must also be accompanied by an official translation.
  • Renters not from the United States must provide a valid, government issued, secondary form of identification such as a passport.
  • For local renters using a debit card, two utility bills will be required.*

 

4. Can I return the vehicle outside of office hours?

5. When is an additional day charged?

All rentals are charged based on a 24 hour billing period. Only when a rental exceeds a cycle of 24 hours will any additional day(s) charge apply.

6. What if I return my rental vehicle late?

If you are late with your rental vehicle, please give a call to Sixt rent a car Reservations department. The department is 24/7 and we will be happy to advise of further options if you are running late.

8. Is smoking permitted in the vehicle?

Sixt operates on a strict non-smoking policy in all of Sixt rent a car vehicles. Sixt rent a car will enforce a special cleaning charge to the renter if a returned vehicle requires special treatment to remove any evidence of smoking.

9. Will I be covered by my own insurance?

If a customer chooses to not take coverage with Sixt then it is required to note their insurance provider in the insurance field as well as their policy number. For rentals outside the USA please see the respective terms for the hiring country via Sixt rent a car rental information page.

10. Who is responsible for parking fines / traffic offenses?

The renter of the vehicle is solely responsible for any traffic offense fines and related administration fees incurred during their rental period.

11. Can someone else other than myself drive the vehicle?

Yes, but the additional driver must be listed on the rental contract. The second driver must also provide their valid driving license for inspection before becoming a named driver on the rental and this can be done at any Sixt location throughout the rental period. A fee applies for the additional driver. For rentals in the state of California and in other locations where required by law, the additional driver is free of charge.

12. When do your weekend prices start and finish?

Sixt rent a car core weekend prices start from 12:00 on Friday to 09:00 on the following Monday. For commercial vehicles weekend prices start from the time that your pick-up location opens on Friday to 09:00hrs on the following Monday.

13. Can I return the vehicle to a different location?

Sixt US offers one-way rentals between select locations, and a one-way fee may apply.Please see the respective terms of rental for full details and other countries terms via this page.

14. Can I book a vehicle and pay for it even if I will not be the person who picks up and drives it?

No, at the time of booking the drivers name must be provided along with the credit card used for payment. The name listed on the credit card used must also match the driver’s name.

15. Can I leave the vehicle empty of fuel?

Sixt rent a car provide all rental with a full tank of fuel, therefore it must be return with a full tank of fuel to avoid additional charges as specified on the rental contract. In addition Sixt offers their customers the option of pre-paid fuel. By opting to pre-pay the fuel in advance you may return the vehicle with less than a full tank of fuel.

16. What do I do in the event of a breakdown or accident?

Sixt provides the relevant contact details on the rental agreement provided to you upon pickup.  Contact information will also be provided for International/European breakdown as long as Sixt have given authorization for the vehicle to be taken abroad. If a vehicle is supplied by one of our Partners contact information for the breakdown will be available in the vehicle.

17. What if I want to extend the length of my rental?

If paying by credit card one extension can be requested by calling our Contact Centre at: +1 888 749 8227. Any extensions over the length of five days must be done in-store.

RENTER BEWARE

This is a poor representation of a car rental company. Very poor. I reserved a car and six hours later tried to change and was told no. I paid $400 for a car I never used. This is a foreign group and there are no real people to talk to. It's all recorded. Read the numerous reviews of what has been done to multiple people the world over. STAY AWAY FROM THIS site. I cancelled the card I used for the reservation. Don't trust this site.

THE WORST!!!

STAY AWAY!!! THE WORST COMPANY!!!
On Monday, 12th of August 2019, after a long trip from Greece, I arrived in the airport of Edinburgh with my wife and I went to the reception of Sixt, in order to receive the car of my reservation and to begin our honeymoon. There, something beyond belief happened. Sixt's employees rejected my VALID EU driving license because it did not have english letters, according to the "company's policy". As a result of this I had to go to EVERY SINGLE company in the rental center, in order to find an available car in the FULL SEASON of August. After THREE hours I finally rented a car from Europcar. My first day of my honeymoon was ruined because of Sixt, as I arrived to Glasgow, where I had booked a hotel, at 23:00!

When I asked the employees in what policy they were reffering to, showing to them the official policy from the official site of Sixt, they pointed to me the paragraph for the non EU licenses. When Greece became a non EU country??? Their policy said clearly: "Valid driving licences of all other EU countries are accepted in the UK without further preconditions". Every other company accepted my VALID EU driving license, with my VALID EU ID for translation. They just did not have any available car, except of Europcar, because of the full season. That's why I had made a reservation in Sixt and I paid for this, 8 months ago, in order to guarantee a car.

Also, the employees told me that I would receive a mail for a refund and that on Tuesday (13/08/2019) the manager would call me. I did not receive any mail or phone call. They led me to such a hassle and they didn't even contact me!! That is UNACCEPTABLE!!!

Stay away in order to avoid a similar hassle!! I paid the double amount of money and I did not received any refund!

Absolutely a Scam

We booked a midsize SUV in Rome several months ago but was told the day before picking up that the booking was cancelled only when we rang them. No apologies but Offered a downsized car at very up sized price.

I would give them a zero rating as there was no service, no explanation or what's ever. Try to avoid such a scam at any cost.

Poor Customer Service

Rented a Mercedes CLA six months in advance of when I was to pick it up. Arriving at the airport discovered had to wait for a Van to get to Offsite Rental Site that was 10 miles away, not your typical “offsite” location. Get there and am told we don’t have the car you reserved. I asked what do you have and another ten minutes went by when had to go to Garage to check. Then they tried to up sell me to a different car. Finally, tired & aggravated with the whole experience I drove off in the Volvo Station Wagon they gave me. Two days later I called the Hotline # to see if I could “exchange” the car. The Rep said she would call the site and see if they had another car to swap with, after two minutes she gets back and says sorry, nothing available. I asked, do you have Jeeps, without checking she says we don’t rent Jeeps. I looked on your site and you do rent Jeeps. First & last experience with this company. I should have stuck with Hertz like I normally do but as this rental was for a month thought I would save a few dollars. Looking at what I was given for a vehicle, and all the add on’s I was charged with it was the same money. You get what you pay for so this mistake is on me. It won’t happen again.

Highway robbery

When I rented on line for a twelve day vacation in Miami I thought I got a pretty good deal until a month later when I received a bill for tolls. It showed 37 tolls totaling $31.76 plus various “fees” of $206.99 on top for a total charge of $238.75. When I called I was told that they had the right to charge a $5.00 “Administration fee” for each toll transaction. That came to $185 in addition to the tolls. This was not something that I was aware of at the time of rental. When I rented online and prepaid the rental I was not aware that there might be these excessive charges. I guess Sixt is into padding bills to keep their published rental rates attractive.

BEWARE!!!

Horrible service. They look for ways to get you to "upsell" when you arrive tired from a flight with 2 children. They actually don't let you even attempt to put your luggage in the car to see if it would fit. They also get you to sign all the documents before fully explaining everything to you.

Once they have your credit card they just keep charging you. Then when you contact them to complain they tell you there is nothing they can do. If I could give a lower rating I would!!!
