Payment Method

You can pay for the service using credit cards, PayPal and Bitpay.

As you’ll see, SpyOFF VPN does not burst the roof with alternative payment methods, but no matter where you might be, you should be able to use one of the three payment methods supported. This confusion stems from a “right of withdrawal” section in the service T&C which states that a customer has the right to withdraw from a contract with the service without stating a reason; and that the “period within which to exercise this right lasts for 14 days from the date the contract is entered into“. It really doesn’t help that 30 days is boldly advertised, but a T&C section is strongly suggesting 14 days; but to be on a safe side, I’ll advice you drop your refund request within 14 days if you must.

The only downside is that the particular flashrouter which the service supports is expensive.

Apart from connecting and disconnecting, the settings menu can take you to where you’ll change your protocol, and enable the kill switch. The app focuses on getting the job done, and there are no above average configuration settings.

SpyOFF VPN provides three VPN protocols – OpenVPN  (UDP/ TCP), L2TP/ IPSec, and PPTP.

The OpenVPN is widely regarded as a secure protocol; as it is open source; but no vulnerability has been found in it. It authenticates data with digital certificates. Also, it provides good speed, even with long distance connections. It is the VPN protocol recommended by every security expert, and it’s a big plus that SpyOFF VPN supports it.

The L2TP/ IPSec is also a protocol that can be used when the OpenVPN is not available. It provides the same security as the OpenVPN but slightly slower. The PPTP is a protocol widely regarded as insecure, as it can be cracked with little effort. However, it is very fast, and therefore optimal for streaming.

To make choosing a protocol and encryption easy, SpyOFF VPN gives you for security nodes to choose from – Ultra secure, balanced, high speed, an expert.

The ultra secure mode, as the name suggest, gives you the best security possible, it uses the OpenVPN protocol and 256-bit encryption. The downside is that the maximum encryption mean you’ll sacrifice speed.

We see this with almost every VPN service; since, out of privacy concerns, users seek VPN services that do not keep logs, they all claim not to keep logs. However, many of them sing the no-log song just as advert blurbs, and they will go on to keep data on users. Therefore, it is important to dig a little under the covers of the SpyOFF VPN service to know if their no-log policy is for real or just another advert blurb.

I give it to SpyOFF VPN for transparency; their logging policy page and privacy policy clearly spells out everything.

Since this is a no-logging discussion, let’s start with what the service does not collect or log. This include IP addresses, browser history, destination of internet connection or meta data, and DNS requests.

There you have it; SpyOFF VPN does not keep activity logs or connection logs. The activities you are carrying out over he internet remains private; the service will not store data relating to the sites you visit, what you download or upload, what mails you revive or send or any such activity. They also will not keep track of your connections such as your source IP address when connecting, the SpyOFF IP addresses used, connection and disconnection times, the total bandwidth used or any other such data.

This is a fine logging policy for user privacy, because there are lots of services that store connection data. Though, they’ll claim that the stored connection data is harmless; that is not entirely true. The logging policy of SpyOFF VPN relating to the use of the VPN is definitely what every user want.

However, before the VPN use, there is something very worrying. SpyOFF VPN states that “for the customer’s protection”, they store “the IP address of the internet connection from which the direct debit authorisation was granted during registration”. If you are wondering what that means; it means that at the time of registering for the service, they store the transaction information (date and time of transaction, payment method, selected subscription plan and invoice amount) as well as the IP address you used. So except you’ll be registering for SpyOFF VPN using a VPN cover, they will have your real IP logged in their systems.

Apart from the payment info,  when registering, they also collect your email address and surname. When you use the email support service, they store your email address and message; but when you use the contact form, they also collect your first and last name.

The collection of names when registering or using the mentioned support channels is something that the service can really do without, because it can put off some users. You’ll even fare worse if you use the live chat (more on this later). According to SpyOFF VPN, they use service Zendesk to provide live chat, and if you use it they’ll collect not only your email address, name and chat history, but also IP address and country of origin.

On a happy ending, the service pledge not to transfer any data to third parties; and they publish a Warrant Canary page that shows that they have not received a warrant to disclose user data, and that none of their assets have been seized for data capturing purposes.

Jurisdiction

SpyOFF VPN is located in San Marino. This makes the service 100% legal and legit. San Marino may be nestled in Italy, but it is a microstate with its own sovereignty. This means that the data retention laws in Italy and many other European nations are not applicable in San Marino, which makes it a privacy friendly jurisdiction for a VPN service.

The service will not be compelled to store users data, and it is less likely that the local government will come knocking for such data. Also, San Marino is not a member of the expanded 14-Eyes surveillance network, which is an agreement between 14 countries to gather and share intelligence. With SpyOFF VPN in San Marino which is outside this network, it is less likely that your data will be captured and be shared around the world in a spy network.

However a strong association was observed between SpyOFF VPN and Germany which was, in the least, not clear enough. For example, other than English, the SpyOFF VPN website is available only in German. Also, the app has German as its default language (but you can turn change this to English), but its blog is exclusively in German. I can think up a good explanation for all of this; which is that the VPN is a German-facing service. However, what I cannot explain is the statement that the zero-logging policy of the service is “partially due to a judgement issued by the Berlin District Court in 2007, which declared that the logging of the IP addresses of the users of an internet portal without their consent was prohibited“.

The problem is that Germany is a member of the Eyes network. Why will it’s policy be influenced by a ruling in Germany? Until this is clear, I can’t answer for how much of the 14 eyes influence SpyOFF isn’t under.

Speed

Some VPN services would make the claim of being able to increase your internet speed. That can only be the case when your ISP was throttling your speed. Generally, a VPN will slow down your speed because the encryption it does takes its toll on speed.

However, a fast VPN service will only drop speed marginally, while the slow ones will bring speed down to a screeching halt. We tested SpyOFF VPN to fin where they’ll rank. We took off speed performance when connected to a couple of locations, averaged the result, and compared this to the speed reading when the VPN is disconnected.

On the average, SpyOFF VPN reduce download speed and upload speed by 54% and 59% respectively. This are good speed but not great; nevertheless, you’ll be able to do virtually everything seamlessly.

Server Network

You’ll notice that the server network neglects the whole of South America and the Middle East. This means that in many places of the world, you’ll find a close SpyOFF VPN server to connect to for optimal performance.

That said, the SpyOFF server network with its thousands of IPs and hundreds of server locations will adequately serve your spoofing needs and make you disappear. The service also offers unlimited server switches which further enhances your anonymity because it allows you fly one virtual location to another as many times as you wish. In terms of unblocking, you’ll unblock contents from choice locations around the world, but might come stuck because only 25 countries are covered.

Also, many VPN lie about their servers. Very often they use virtual servers to inflate their server count. You’ll notice this when you connect to a particular server location, but another location is showing as your virtual location. Unfortunately,  This was noticed with SpyOFF VPN.

Customer Support

VPN users would want a service that has effective channels for answering (or solving) any question (or issue) they may have. So it’s important to consider the effectiveness of the support service of a VPN.

In this regard SpyOFF VPN provides the usual channels – the self help channels and direct contact channels. For self help, the provide an FAQ section, a knowledge base, and tutorials.

For all of these support channels can use some improvement. The FAQ answer some of the questions you might gave about the service, but they are not as extensive as we’ll like. Same goes for the knowledgebase. The tutorials are detailed set up instructions for manually configuring the VPN on your service; while they are detailed enough, some screenshots for the steps in the process will make the tutorials easier.

For directly contacting a support agent, SpyOFF VPN provides only a support ticket, an email service and a live chat. The effectiveness of these channels are something else. When you contact support, you’ll expect a fast response; you have to change your expectations with SpyOFF VPN. Response to our email and ticket submissions took more than 24 hours to be answered. I looked around the web to see if ours was a one-off, but realized that it wasn’t as there were too many complaints of the service having long response times.

The company says in their T&C that they use Zendesk to provide live chat for customers, but we did not see a live chat feature anywhere. Thus, you’ll have to patiently wait for the email response, as there is no way to have instant feedback with SpyOFF VPN.

Summary

SpyOFF VPN is a legit VPN service that delivers many of the primary ingredients of a VPN. On the security front: it uses secure protocols with industry high encryption, it features a kill switch, plug all security leaks, have a no-logging policy, and is located in privacy friendly San Marino.

On connectivity: they have a respectable server network, they work with almost every device, and allow unlimited connections. On the service level: they have dedicated VPN clients which makes the VPN easy to set up and use, they allow torrenting, and they unblock Netflix.

It would seem that everything is sunshine and roses, but it’s not. While the service does not keep user activity and connection logs, they collect IP address during registration. Speeds are at best average. Lastly, customer support is almost non-existence.
