What Is AirVPN?

AirVPN is one of the most respected VPNs in the VPN industry. It is based in Italy, and was founded in 2010. The small group that founded Air VPN has been described in many circles as “a group of hacktivists” a word coined by clipping hackers and activists.

This would suggest that the service know too well the dangers posed by hackers, and that its service will provide protection from such dangers.

How well does the Air VPN service do in protecting users from online threats? This review will provide the information to help you in answering that question.

Is AirVPN Safe and legit?

AirVPN complalints and feedback:

Anna says:

Top quality. Excellency at its best.

I am with AirVPN since 3 months and I am pleasantly surprised. My only regret is that I did not find it before.

Speed is excellent, I get most of the time 80 Mbit/s on my 100 line and they offer circumvention techniques that defy my ISP throttling p2p, on every server. Very stable, never had a drop, and software has an option that blocks leaks. I feel very secure, I stressed it in any way I could and never managed to cause a leak.

I had a problem to run a web site behind their servers and the support helped me to resolve the problem quickly. It came out it was a mistake on my side, a stupid one but difficult to spot. They did not give up until they found it, great!

I like that their software is open source too.

John says:

I have tried many vpn companies. I sticked with airvpn because their support was really great, they went out of their way to help me when I had a problem. I also find their service to also be real value for money, there are other vpn providers of similar quality but their prices are noticably higher.

James says:

Fantastic service: high speed servers, impeccable customer support, a variety of connection modes to bypass blocks or throttling against OpenVPN and more than 200 real servers (at least I checked most of them to make sure they are not virtual servers).
I was impressed by their real time servers monitor too, very cool. Perfect Forward Secrecy and (so far) the only one I could find with 4096 bit DIffie-Hellman keys – properly implemented perfect forward secrecy is important for me.

Packages and Pricing

Service plan and pricing

Air VPN currently offer only one premium plan it. They have five pricing options which depends on how much time the user is willing to use the service. The five pricing options are: three days, one month, three months, six months and one year. The 3 days package is €1.00 (equivalent of $1.13); the one month package is €7.00 (equivalent of $7.91); the three months package is €15.00 (equivalent of $16.95); the six months package is €30.00 (equivalent of $33.90); and the one year package is €54.00 (equivalent of $61.02).

It is always better to commit to a longer term billing option, because it will save cost. Using the one month plan as the baseline, the three months and six months packages are discounted by 28% and break down to a monthly fee of €5.00 ($5.65), while the one year package is discounted by 35% and break down to a monthly fee of €4.50 ($5.09).

Most VPN services have one month and one year deals and no middle deals to suit users with such needs; as a result, AirVPN’s pricing will appeal to a wide range of users because they have various short term packages that will suit users with short term VPN needs (e.g. the three days package, the three months and six months packages).

It should also be said that the AirVPN service has a relatively inexpensive single month deal. At just €7.00 (equivalent of $7.91), their one month deal is cheaper than most services who hang their one month deals at about $10.00.  However, their best deals do not enjoy the massive discount that some other services give; while AirVPN discount their best deal by 35%, there are services that give as much as 70% discounts. Overall, the AirVPN service is relatively cheap in the short term; but for the long term, there are cheaper services.

Payment Methods

The AirVPN service accepts standard payment method such as PayPal and credit/ debit card (master card, visa, discover card etc). They also accept anonymous payment methods such as bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. It is an impressive wide range of payment methods, which ensures that users from any part of the world would find a convenient way to make payments.

It is a big scoring point that the Air VPN service supports anonymous payment methods. Some of the other good VPN services do not make provisions for anonymous payment method; and this makes it difficult for privacy and security concious VPN users to subscribe to them.

For those who need total privacy, who are concerned about submitting personal information (like credit card info) as part of the billing process, the AirVPN service would be worth lookibg at because they allow you pay anonymously.

Free trial

Free trials are offered by most services to give users the opportunity to test the service free of charge before committing their resources to a subscription. The objective is for users to not just know but also to experience what they intend to buy.

Air VPN does not offer a free trial. The lack of a free trial will disappoint a lot of users and might turn them away from the AirVPN service because there are lots of services that give free trials. Some services give as many of seven days for you to test run them.

But it should be remembered that the AirVPN service offer an inexpensive three days billing options (at just €1.00) which a user can subscribe to to have a test of their services. The good news is that, if the service did not meet some of the expectations you had of it, you’d be losing only an Euro. This is far better than some other VPN services that do not offer free trials but have long term subscription with huge sum of money which can be lost if their services is not satisfactory.

Refund policy

However, the AirVPN service ensures that users do users do not lose money. Even while not offering free trials, they make sure that their first concern is not users’ money but users’ satisfaction. They do this by offering a three days money back guarantee.

If you subscribe to any of their service and you are not totally satisfied; you can request a refund of your full payment. The only condition is that the refund must be requested within three days of making paymemt for the service. It is a question asked guarantee; there are no hidden clauses or caveats. So while the Air VPN service does not technically give a free trial; this 3 days money back guarantee can be used to test the service free of charge.

However, some users might say that the three days window is too short for anything, and can rightfully point to other services that offer money back guarantees of up to 30 days.

But, it should be remembered that Air VPN offers a 3 days paid plan; it would be impossible to maintain a 3 days paid plan and offer a money back guarantee of more than 3 days.

That said, if you want a service that gives you enough time to test run them via a generous money back guarantee, you will have to look beyond Air VPN.

AirVPN Features

Ease of use

Air VPN is simple; the downloading and installation is very easy and you will have the service on your device in no time. Their instruction may look technical and complicated;  but the set up of the software is not complicated, it can be done quickly and with ease.

AirVPN interface is clean and simple. Its client, known as Eddie, is also straightforward and easy to navigate. Connecting to servers is pretty straight forward; Eddie gives you the option to connect to the fastest server. I also liked that the servers in Eddies’s server list are arranged according to how well they are performing.

That said, Eddie is a perfect friend that makes VPN experience easy and smooth.

Supported devices

Air VPN can be used on windows, MacOS, Linux, IOS, Android, Chrome and several routers (such as DD-WRT, Tomato, AsusWRT, pfSense); the service is also compatible with the TOR network.

This is a very impressive list. It is rare to see a service that support devices ranging from computer operating systems to mobile browsers, and also routers. Most of the highly rated VPN services do not support as many devices.

Simultaneous connections

Based on the fact that users have  two or more devices, they want a VPN that allows them to protect all devices simultaneously without extra cost. The VPN industry average for simultaneous connections is five.

Air VPN allows five simultaneous connections per account. That means they meet up with the industry standard; you can connect up to five different devices without attracting extra cost.

Streaming

Many users seek VPN services for entertainment purposes. These class of users are drawn to services with the capability to unblock geo-locked contents; they want to use the service to stream and watch contents not available for viewing in their location but available in some other location. VPN help accomplish this by making the user appear to be in the location with the desired contents.

However some streaming services have gotten wiser, and are blocking VPNs from circumventing their geo restrictions. One of the foremost VPN blockers is Netflix. The streaming giant has blocked many VPNs, that any VPN service that can still give access to Netflix vast library is regarded as an ideal service for streaming.

Many of the good VPN services can no longer give Netflix, but it is wonderful to see that Air VPN works very well with Netflix. AirVPN has a community forum that keeps users updated on which servers are working with the streaming service.

Torrenting

Torrenting is one of the most efficient ways to download large files in the internet. The need to use a VPN to torrent safely and anonymously cannot be over emphasized. Apart from the legal issues that could arise from downloading torrents, insidious peers could use the file sharing activity to get at personal information stored in devices. Torrenting is one of the services where a VPN is  most useful to its users.

AirVPN lets you torrent to your satisfaction by allowing Peer-to-Peer (P2P) connections. There are many high rated VPN services that ban torrenting on their servers; while some others that let you torrent but limit the activity. The Air VPN service has an edge over many VPN services by allowing you torrent without monitoring your data limit or setting any restriction nomatter how large the files you are moving are. Air VPN is for you if all you need is a VPN for torrenting.

Privacy and security features

Protocols and encryption

The Air VPN service supports only the OpenVPN protocol. Some other services will give a range of connection options such as the L2TP and PPTP protocols, but AirVPN regard these connection alternatives as too insecure.

Their support for only the OpenVPN protocol stem out of a commitment to give you optimal security. In their words: Air VPN uses OpenVPN to establish the connection between your computer and our servers. OpenVPN is the most reliable and secure solution for encrypted tunnels, offering a higher than military degree of security”

In terms of encryption, the OpenVPN has top notch nigh-uncrackable encryption. They detail their encryption as: “Stay protected with the security offered by high level encryption: 4096 bit RSA keys size, AES-256-CBC Data Channel, HMAC SHA1 Control “

AirVPN uses AES-256 cipher with SHA-1 HMAC authentication for its data channels; they also support perfect forward secrecy to ensure that your session keys will not be compromised even if the private key of the server is compromised.

This is the level of encryption used by security conscious organization like banks and the military. The encryption standard of Air VPN is unbeatable even with the most advanced modern technology.

True, the OpenVPN is the most reliable and secured protocol for encrypted tunnels, and any VPN service that does not support it is not rated highly. However, most users will want access to a range of protocols because the different protocols have peculiar benefits, and each can prove useful in certain circumstance. If alternative connection points is a primary concern, then the Air VPN service might just not cut it with only the OpenVPN on offer.

Kill switch

The kill switch is increasingly being featured in VPNs to keep users privacy intact in those emergency situations when the VPN looses connection. It is an important feature which every VPN focused on giving users optimal anonymity and privacy should have.

In case there is an abrupt disconnection, the kill switch cuts off internet access, ensuring that you do not continue transmitting data online without VPN protection.

Air VPN assures the users total privacy and security while performing all their online activities. They provide a kill switch so that if the VPN disconnect for any reason, your activities will not be exposed. This makes Air VPN better than some other VPN industries that do not feature a kill switch.

Security leaks protection

Some services do a great work of encrypting data and masking location but will leak IP and DNS to the default connection which will expose the user’s real location and online activity.

Air VPN does not allow any leaks. I did not encounter DNS leak,  IPv6 leaks, and WebRTC leaks while testing the software. Eddie (the Air VPN app) prevents IPv6 leaks and WebRTC leaks if “Network lock” is enabled. Air VPN have DNS leaks  protection. This is very important because it gives you 100% anonymity

Logging policy

According to the Air VPN website, one of the feature of the service is “No monitoring nor logging of your online activities”.

Don’t they all say that? VPN service providers know that logging compromise users privacy, and also that no-logs is a fine privacy selling point, so almost all of them claim not to keep logs. However, looking deep into their privacy policy and terms of service do reveal some to keep logs against their no-log claims. To it was important to examine the fine prints of Air VPN.

Air VPN privacy policy is very thorough and honest, and most importantly strictly no logs – no data is collected or stored. They do not request for information that will breach your privacy and security.

Most VPN services that are “no-logs” collects emails and some form of payment information. The emails they use for account creation and communication with the service, and the payment info they use for crediting your VPN account when you subscribe. It was interesting to read Air VPN’s position on this.

Users do not need to submit any personal data to access the services of Air VPN not even an email address. In their words: “A valid e-mail address is NOT required to access Air services and/or receive technical support“. They make providing an email address optional for users who would want to receive courtesy e-mail pertaining to technical support.

In the area of payment information, Air VPN is also exemplary. If users make payment for the Air service via intermediary companies (e.g. PayPal), any data which the users provides as part of the billing process is not under the control of Air VPN and are not stored or treated by Air VPN, but by the payment processors companies. Even when a payment processor sends Air VPN an Instant Payment Notification (which includes personal information of a cutomer), the service does not store such notifications; therefore the privacy of the customer in the system of Air VPN is not affected.

Air VPN allows says that users have the right to ask for information about their data and to ask that any data pertaining to them in the Air VPN system be deleted. According to them this can done “with a simple written request by e-mail to: info (at) airvpn (dot) org“.

Also, Air VPN web servers do not use third party add-ons or any other procedure that may lead to users profiling by any third party or by Air itself. They do not store cookies on your system when you use the service.

They categorically call any pressure from private actors to obtain users’ data an illegal act, and promise not only to inform the competent authorities but also to prosecute the private entities responsible for any such illegal act.

Though they do not mention it, I suppose they would respond to a valid court paper to disclose users data. However, such disclosure will be non revealing because in their system their is no storage of any activity traffic and/or traffic content and/or IP addresses and/ or personal information of customers or users.

This is one of the only companies located in countries included in surveillance alliance jurisdiction  that truly do not keep logs of data or personal information. In Air VPN the last thing you’ll ever have to worry about with is security breach via logging. Your security is guaranteed; because they have and follow a strict no logging policy.

Jurisdiction

Air VPN has their office located in Italy; which is among the 14 Eyes countries. Membership in the 14 Eyes alliance includes : United States, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, France, Netherlands, Norway, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Sweden, and Italy. These countries set up a surveillance network to work together in spying on specific targets. This mean that any users’ information captured would be shared around the world in the network.

Air VPN’s location would have been a big threat to privacy and security but because of their strict no log policy there is no information for the surveillance system to capture.

Server Networks

AirVPN has 219 servers  in 20 countries around the world. The small number of servers available does not enhance anonymity since there is no much options to connect to in other to spoof your location. The performance will also be affectedbecause many users will be connected to few servers.

Also, Air VPN server operation makes the service lag behind a lot of VPN services in the industry; the number of servers available and countries covered are small compared to the thousands of servers operated and 50+ countries covered by many of the highly rated VPN services.

One fine thing about Air VPN’s relatively small network of only 219 servers in only 20 countries is that it is widely distributed across the globe. They spread the servers such that anywhere you are in the world, you can get a nearby Air VPN server to connect to. In this regards, Air VPN have proven themselves good in managing servers because it is not easy to use that  number of servers to achieve wide geographical distribution.

Speed

Air VPN has an encouraging speed performance. “No maximum speed limit, it depends only on the server load“. Some of the near by locations showed excellent speed; and there are pronounced reduction in speed as you connect with a distance server. But on the average the result was very good.

Empirically, the average speed reduction was 50% for downloads and 59% for uploads. Download speed is usually considered the most important by many users, and Air VPN did performed well in this regard. Many services who reduce speed by 50% are considered fast. The bottom line is that Air VPN cannot be included among the very fast VPNs yet; but they had  serviceable speed.

Customer support

Air VPN have three support channel: Email and forum and FAQ section. It takes them about 6 to 24 hours to respond to your queries submitted through the email service. When contacting AirVPN, you receive an automated message acknowledging that  your email/ ticket has been submitted. They have staffs that are experts and professional which make it easy to resolve issues – they give thorough and satisfactory answers.

The forum is full of information; admittedly, a beginner might perceive some of the information as complicated and might not be able to understand it all. However, users can use the functional email support service to reach the service for quick and specific solutions.

The three channels which Air VPN supports is not enough; there  should be other channels to give users options. Many VPN services have a lot of direct support channels which includes live chat and telephone service. Having a range of support channels gives users different avenues to use, and it makes users questions to be answered timely.

Summary

AirVPN offers a range of security features you are unlikely to find in other services of its kind. To provide absolute protection and anonymity they provide: the most secure and trusted VPN protocol with high level encryption standard; a kill switch functionality; leaks protection; and a honest, thorough and strict no log policy. Add that they do not require an email address to use the service and that you can pay for the service anonymously; and you can be assured that your security and privacy is 100% when using Air VPN services. Air VPN offers serviceable speed; they allow torrenting without limits, and have excellent streaming capability.

Air VPN comes across as a great service; but with a few drawbacks. Their support for only the OpenVPN protocol will turn off user who would need alternative protocols in some circumstances. Also, Air VPN customer support channels are limited. Their location in a fourteen-Eyes country would be counted a con by many users, but the strict no-log policy of Air VPN greatly reduce the inherent risks of their location.
