For example, at the time of writing this review, Jared had over 27,000 loose diamonds to choose from. To put this in perspective; like-stores like Kay Jewelers had under 10,000 loose diamonds, while stores such as Zales and Helzberg Diamonds only manage to hold about 20,000.
However, Jared is by no means the industry inventory leaders. In fact, Jared doesn’t even come close to these leaders who easily hold over 100,000 loose diamonds (just look over at stores like James Allen and Blue Nile). However, this is not to say that Jared “five times” claim is empty. In fact, it is impossible for jewelers like Jared to offer as much inventory as jewelers like James Allen. This is because James Allen and its like are purely online stores, who do not hold the diamonds they list on their sites. These diamonds are owned by independent third parties; the particular store will only buy it from the partner if an order is placed in its website for the diamond. But jewelers like Jared who operate physical retail stores must have the physical items in its stores, and holding hundreds of thousands of diamond inventory is simply cost prohibitive.
That said; comparing Jared with “online” jewelry stores like James Allen (in terms of selection is unfair) as there’s no other conclusion but to write off Jared. It’ll be like comparing a dumper to a Ferrari (in terms of speed); yes, they are both automobiles, but there’ll be no other conclusion but to write off the dumper.
However if Ferraris are compared with Ferraris and dumpers with dumpers, you’ll find that Jared really holds more inventory; and thus, has a bigger selection than its likes.
You’ll want to be able to have top quality products in any retail store, especially a diamond store was given the significant investment that such purchases entail. Thus, the ideal diamond store should hold A-quality articles with sound certificates.
In this regards, Jared only does so-so. For example, you’ll find that most of the preset rings in Jared are I1 or I2 clarity diamonds, or at best SI2 diamonds; the included diamonds have flaws that can be observed even by the unaided casual observer. It doesn’t make sense that you’re buying a ring to symbolize your beautiful love, and the centre stone comes out with an ugly inclusion/ flaw.
You’ll also find that a lot of diamonds in Jared are with GSI and IGI certificates. It’s no secret that these labs tend to be loose or more forgiving, such that a GSI graded diamond will be found to be up to one or more level what more reputable lab like GIA will grade it. That is a Jared’s SI2 clarity diamond may only be a lower quality I2 clarity diamond on the GIA clarity chart.
Granted, there are also diamonds in Jared that are graded by the reputable GIA and AGS labs (especially diamonds in their branded collections and their Chosen by Jared collection). However, that Jared holds diamonds with the substandard GSI and IGI certificates at all makes it come out as not focused on providing quality.
Online purchases are different from regular purchases in brick and mortar stores, because unlike the regular purchases when buying online, you do not get to physically see and assess the items. That said; you’ll want a store that provides resources which will help you with your buy decision.
Jared does relatively well in this regards. They provide product images showing every item from different angles. Also, many of the loose diamonds in Jared are available for viewing online with 3600 video feature. If a picture is worth a thousand words; a video is worth a thousand pictures. It’s a good thing that Jared features video viewer that allows you to see the diamonds/ ring from every possible angle.
However, we’ll want to see more of their diamonds with this technology. Also, the information that Jared provides is limited. For example, ASET images, IDealscope images and other pertinent information which customers can use in analyzing the light performance of a diamond are not provided by Jared. Granted, not many jewelers readily provide this information; but they are can be supplied if requested. However, Jared does not say anything about meeting such requests.
However, when buying from Jared, you don’t need to buy blind. This is because Jared leverage on its vast store network, and allow customers to see loose diamonds before purchasing. That is, you can reserve a diamond online, and book an appointment at a Jared location close to you to view it in person. However, for the service, you’ll have to make a down payment of 20% of the purchase cost.
Customers can have a change of heart about a purchase at any time, including after placing the order. Thus, customers will want stores that allow them to cancel or modify an order after submitting it.
Many stores do not allow order modification or cancellation after it is placed, and you’ll have to wait to receive it and start the return process.
Jared does not allow order modification but allows order cancellation within one hour of placing the order. A “modify” button is displayed when on the order status page; but if the button is clicked, it will only lead to the order being cancelled (if the order is within the one-hour cancellation window).
Value for money is something that every customer seek, and more so when buying high-end articles like diamonds, and diamond jewelry. In this regards, the ideal jewelry store will be one that is reasonably priced.
The reasonableness of a retailer’s pricing can only be determined by comparative analysis (that is, with its competition). The big question is whether Jared comes out as providing value for money when its prices are compared with the competition. The short answer is no.
To illustrate this, at the time of writing this review, we looked at a 1-1/2 ct diamond engagement ring in Jared (Jared expresses their carat weight in fraction and not decimals). The ring was a classic solitaire ring win 14K White Gold, while the head stone had I color, and SI2 clarity. To give it to them the diamond had GIA certificates. However, the ring was priced at $11,999.99.
Moving over to Blue Nile, you’ll find 1.5 ct I SI2 diamonds with Very Good cut quality priced at $6,722 – $6,778. Take the most expensive of that bunch ($6,778), and set it on a Tapered Cathedral Solitaire Engagement Ring in 14K White Gold priced at $485 (also found in Blue Nile), and you’ll have a ring no different from the one in Jared just at $7263. That is a huge saving of $4737 (some 39.5% cost saving).
You could even get a better quality ring from Blue Nile, and still, pay lower than the $11,999.99 of Jared. For example, 1.5 ct I SI2 Ideal cut diamond was available for $6,994 – $7,889. Taking the most expensive stone ($7,889) and mounting it on our classic $485 setting gives us a better quality engagement ring at $8374. That’s some $3,626 more than you would have spent in Jared (some 30.2% cost saving). That is, you get a better quality ring, and pay some 30% less.
You can do such comparisons for every item in Jared, and you’ll find that you can get better value somewhere else. Sometimes you can save as much as 100% by jumping Jared and checking one of the online jewelry stores.
However, it must be said that Jared’s poor performance in this regards is as a result of comparing Ferrari’s sports cars to CAT’s dumpers. The traditional brick and mortar jewelry stores just cannot keep up with the prices of the online jewelers. As mentioned earlier, holding inventory is expensive; most of the inventory held by brick and mortar stores is only leased to the stores, and there are charges for such leases (known as consignment in the industry), there are insurance payments for every held article, there is the cost of maintaining the physical stores, and so much more. All these costs are passed onto the customers in the form of relatively high prices. Since inventory is eliminated in the online stores, the associated cost of inventory is also eliminated, and these online stores are able to offer relatively lower prices.
That said; if the value for money is what you are looking for, you’ll be better served in the pure online jewelry stores. But if you must buy from a brick and mortar and mortar store, you’ll find Jared’s pricing to be competitive.

The good thing is that there is a Custom Design Studio in every Jared store. You’ll find certified diamontologists and master craftsmen at your service to help you create that really unique piece of jewelry.
Price Match Guarantees are offered by stores committed to offering merchandise at the right price. Jared actually advertised having a Price Match Guarantee where they promise to match the price of a like-for-like certified loose diamond from any other jewelry retailer.
The price match is for only loose diamonds and does not apply to settings or any other jewelry. Also, the service is not available online, but only in-store; and the onus is on you (the customer) to bring the diamond certification that will be used for the evaluation, as well as the proof of the selling price.
Know that price matching technically means that the retailer offering it offers the best prices, as the retailer will match the lowest prices out there in the market. Given that the brick and mortar stores just cannot offer the low prices of their online counterparts, you’ll wonder if it isn’t a bold move for Jared to offer price matching.
In our opinion, it isn’t a bold move but a marketing move. This is because Jared demonstrably offers relatively higher prices, yet passes itself off as “committed to helping you find the best prices” because of its price match guarantee.
So the question is how Jared is able to still continue its high pricing while parading itself as offering a price match guarantee. The answer is in two things, the first is the details (technically no two diamonds are actually the same which is why a diamond’s certificates can serve as the diamond’s fingerprint), and the second is that the final like-for-like diamond evaluation is at the discretion of the authorized Jared personnel at the store. With no two diamonds being exactly alike, and with the final say-so being at the discretion of Jared; it’s not difficult to see how Jared can post clearly higher prices and claim to offer a price match guarantee.

Jared stands by its products with this lifelong guarantee. It is a complimentary guarantee that covers:
Lifetime Cleaning and Inspections – You can take your diamond or gemstone jewelry to a Jared store for inspection and cleaning, at any time. However, the jewelry has to be submitted every 6 months else the guarantee will be voided
Stone Replacement Guarantee – Jared will repair or replace any diamond or gemstone that is chipped, broken or is lost from its original setting during normal wear. Know that what is and what is not “normal wear” will be key in having this complimentary service
Mounting Guarantee – Unlike the others before it, the mounting is guaranteed foe only 12 months from purchase. Jared will repair or replace your mounting within the promotional period, if any defect is found.
At any time, you can take any diamond jewelry purchased from Jared brands (whether online or in-store) to any Jared store, and trade it for new diamond jewelry. However, the new jewelry has to be at least twice the original purchase price of the old diamond jewelry. Trade-Ins are becoming popular in the industry, as it allows customers to get new jewelry without having to pay the full price. This is because the returned diamond jewelry will be towards getting the new one.
If you walk into any Jared’s retail location for a purchase, you’ll walk out with the item (if you completed the purchase). However, if you make a purchase in its e-commerce platform (Jared.com), to receive possession of the item, it has to be moved from Jared’s store/fulfilment center to your shipping address. Thus, shipping is an important consideration when looking at making online purchases from Jared. The important things to consider include shipping destinations, shipping times, and shipping costs.
Except a store ships to your location, it’ll be difficult to receive delivery of any order placed in the store. Thus, if you’re serious about making an online purchase, before going through a store’s products or services, you should consider whether it serves (ships to) your location. The total delivery time consist of order processing time (how long it takes after placing an order before it ships out), and order shipment time (how long it takes to get to the shipping address after it is shipped out). Thus, you’ll want fast performance both in order processing and shipment.
Jared does relatively well in this regards. For order processing; all in-stock items that do not need resizing or personalization will be shipped the same day if the order is placed before 2:00 pm on Monday – Friday (ET). While orders placed after 2:00 pm in the weekdays, on any weekends or on holidays are shipped the next business day. Items needing resizing or personalization will need additional time before being shipped; you’ll find the applicable time at checkout.
For shipment; you can have your order shipped to a store, or you can have it shipped directly to your door. Shipment to a Jared store is done with a Second Day delivery, which means your order will be ready for pick up two days after it ships. It does not help Jared that many jewelry stores in the market offer to ship your items free of charge to your door (albeit with a minimum order requirement).
Jared wants you to be happy with your purchase. As a result, if customers are not satisfied with their purchase, Jared will accept returns. However, return policies can have a lot of booby traps; thus, what follows is a review of Jared’s return policy.
You don’t want to be hindered from returning an unwanted item because of a cumbersome return process. Jared does relatively well in this regards.
You can return Jared’s orders to a Jared’s store or online (by mail). Returning to a store is very convenient as you only need to walk into any Jared’s store with the item (along with its relevant documents and its receipt), whether it was bought in-store or online. This convenient in-store returns of online purchases is something that the primarily online stores cannot offer.
Also, when returning items by mail, the process is fairly easy. You’ll have to visit Jared.com to print a return label. After which you’ll indicate the reason for the return on the packing slip; you’ll proceed to package the item appropriately including all documents, attach the pre-printed return label on the return package, and then mail it to the return shipping address.
Like all jewelry stores, Jared does not allow returns of custom designed merchandise, class rings, special ordered watches, as well as personalized engraved items.

However, though, the email affords relatively faster response when compared to postal mail, feedback is not instant and you may have to wait about 48 hours to get needed help.

Jared is one of the robust diamond and jewelry companies owned by Signet Jewelers. With over 270 stores (mostly in off-mall locations) in the US alone, Jared is a true brick and mortar jeweler; with its online business (from jared.com) contributing very little its overall business.
As a result of its operation as a brick and mortar jeweler, you’ll find that Jared has relatively smaller selection, and relatively higher prices. You’ll find 6 times more diamonds in the pure online diamond stores than you’ll find in Jared; and you’ll find prices in Jared to be as much as 40% – 100% higher than you’ll find in the pure online stores. However, when comparing apples to apples; Jared holds more selection than almost every other brick and mortar diamond store out there, and will also come out as competitively priced.
Also, it doesn’t help Jared’s quality offerings that many of its diamonds are with less reputable certificates (such as IGI and GSI), or that most of its pre-set engagement rings feature less quality included diamonds (at best VS2 diamonds).
If you do decide to overlook the premium and to buy from Jared, you’ll find the regular after sales services (complimentary inspection, cleaning, repairs, etc), and a standard 30 days return process. One very good service that Jared offers which trumps many jewelers is having a design service centre in each store, so you can have your article inspected and repaired on-site.
