Is Alamo Car Rental legit or scam?

Alamo Car Rental is not just a legitimate car rental service but one of the most popular in the industry. There are lots of people using the service all over the world. However, there are some complaints as well as good feedback about Alamo below which you should go through before deciding to patronize their car rental service.

Alamo Car Rental complaints and feedback:

John says:

I am on Maui now and rented from Alamo for the first time. It took less than 5 minutes to use the kiosk, pick my car, and drive away. A tip: join their Insiders Club online first. It is free. You get a free extra driver and discounts of at least 10 percent on all rentals. I have used Thrifty for years, but tried Alamo this time because some of their add-ons are cheaper

Ben says:

OLD…VERY old thread…renting in Charlotte has nothing to do with renting in Hawaii! Sheesh!””

car rental info doesn’t change that much. it’s always pertinent. Me I just go for the best price. Never had problems with any of them.

Oh yeah, Charlotte? Is a person 🙂 LOL!

“”Alamo is not a good option to consider. I tried to rent from Charlotte and had the worst experience.””

Amy says:
Never use Alamo car rental! Look them up on cosumer affairs, yelp and their fb page, there are hundreds of complaints. Wish i did before we rented with them. We rented a car from them in Maui and they double charged us and refuse to give me a refund. I am now also reading about simular complaints.

Munna says:
For the last 5 years we have used DHCR exclusively on multiple islands each year. We have had Budget, Alamo and Enterprise with NO issues!

The only delay was saying no to the insurance up sell on the BI and they had to wash a car!!

Jame F. Says:

don’t go with Alamo I rented a car from them with a gps and the gps didn’t work , got lost twice. when I finally found my way to my condo I phone them and got the run around for 1.5 hours got no where. finally talked to some one that seemed like they cared, they said they would phone back, guess what they never did. they are a bunch of crooks. one of their responses was they would send out road side assistance and they would town the vehicle for a cost just cause the gps was broken. go with someone else highly suggested!!!!!

Derek m says:
We rented a fullsize through Alamo on costcotravel.com & checked in online check-in though Alamo.com. Shuttle was painless, skipped the line & walked directly to the lot & they gave us an option of fullsize or small suv at no additional cost. In & out quickly & happy!

Franklin says:

Pick up at the airport was just very short drive to the Alamo. I stayed with the luggage while my husband went in to secure our reserved car so we were ahead as most had to wait for luggage to be unloaded. They pick up went fast and efficiently. Every thing was fine.

We stayed at The big Island and Maui and used Alamo because we got a better deal. Truthfully it’s not the company you generally use but our service on The Big Island went above and beyond. We knew we wanted to visit 2 island and one of the reasons we picked The Big Island is to take a full day to go across the Island to the waterfalls and volcano/Lava. We waited till our last full day to go there but Late the previous evening we saw our tire was completely flat. We had ran over a nail or screw and the help line wasn’t very helpful. I said lets just see if we can turn it in a trade. As the “helpline’ only suggested using our tiny spare which would have been unsafe for such a long drive. My husband was a mechanic and changed the tire and headed to the Alamo. We called and explained our situation to the night manager .. a very nice helpful Indian gentleman who very graciously stayed open a bit late as we raced there. The next day we had a very nice day and saw some amazing things .. waterfalls, best botanical gardens I’d ever seen and volcano .. all made possible by his helpfulness. I hope his supervisors realize what a gem they have in him and reward his work ethic. Nula you saved our day … Literally.

Ben says:

We arrived in Miami to collect our vehicle to find that they would not accept our card for payment, nor would they accept cash payment. Their terms and conditions said they accepted all MasterCard and Visa card payments; yet they wouldn’t accept our MasterCard. The manager come over to us and didn’t seem to care that we had no other way of making payment (we did not have a credit card to use and no other Debit cards with sufficient money on) We asked what they could do to resolve the situation but they said “nothing” and continued to talk amongst themselves ignoring that we were still standing their with no car to drive off with which we had booked for two weeks.

We had to leave the airport via a taxi to make some calls back home to arrange payments being sent to another bank card. We then had to get a taxi back to the airport (costing $80 there and back) to finally get seen by a member of staff who thankfully this time was a lot more helpful than the so called “manager” of the company.

Nightmare to begin our holiday. Would never use this company again. Stay clear, there’s better companies to use.

Gettef says:
No problems, little bit waiting on pickup car, but with free half fuel tank. After return car, we forgoted expensive glasses, but in few minutes they came to airport bus pickup place and gave us back….car was amazing ( nissan rogue 2017) and without any problems… RECOMMENDING :-))

Nan Chang says:

I rented an Alamo car at Edinburgh in July 2016, to be picked up at midnight. The Alamo office was supposed to close at 24:00. I arrived at about 00:30 as the flight was delayed, and asked for a GPS as my own was lost. They gave me a Mazda 3 with a built-in GPS. I spent nearly an hour learning from the staff how to use it but found it not suitable for me (there is no postal code input). The staff gave me a Garmin. I finally left at about 2am. The staff left after asking me if everything is OK now.

Polo a says:
Please everybody check the condition of your Alamo Rent a Car.
Will NEVER recommend this company .
They could charge you for something you did not cause!!!!
We’ve reserved the car from Alamo through Israel intermediary Ofran on 4/10/2017 and that reservation had complete and final list of service we required . This is the 5th time in the past 3 years that we are renting Alamo when coming to the US and up until now our reservation has always matched our final contract in the US.
This time, apparently, Alamo’ agent took liberty to add another charge (roadside service) before handing over the contract to us and asking to sign in places marked with X.
We have not requested this service, we just signed where the agent showed us to sign to complete the contract.
This is an absolutely disgusting sales practice, to take advantage of people , which just spent 16 hours on a flight and over 24 hours without a sleep and just looking to take the car and go! This is a scam and fraud!!!!
We demand Alamo to remove the Roadside service from our bill because there representative has added this fee to our contract without our request.
Alamo sent us a letter with an explanation, that we have signed on it and offered the refund of 45$. We didn’t agree, so they offered the refund of 65 $ .We are absolutely shocked! The behavior of the rent car company is like a racketeer’s behavior. It’s unbelievable.
Will NEVER recommend this company

Determine Your Travel Details

When and where you want to rent and return your car
Once you’ve booked flights to your vacation destination, reserve your rental car with pick up and drop off times that allow time for you to get to and from your flights. Also, be sure to include your flight number and airline in your car rental reservation so the Alamo team can accommodate any delays that may affect your schedule.

The kind of rental car should you reserve
The cars in Alamo’s fleet come in all shapes, sizes and colors — from the economy car that holds four people and two bags to the premium SUV, which holds eight people and three bags. Check out our vehicle guide to find out which ride is best for your family. And if you’re traveling with a small child, don’t worry about packing a car seat. You can lighten your load by renting one of Alamo’s Child Safety Seats with your vehicle. You can also keep your travel crew entertained by purchasing SiriusXM® satellite radio with your rental, which offers more than 150 channels ranging from commercial-free music and comedy to sports and news radio.

How old you have to be to rent a car and requirements
Consider who will be driving the rental car during your trip. The driver must be at least 21 years old, except in New York and Michigan, where the minimum age is 18. Depending on your location and the size of your rental vehicle, there may be restrictions or additional fees if the driver is younger than 25.

The driver must also have a valid driver’s license from his or her country of residence. If the driver’s license is not in English, he or she must also bring an international driving permit. Lastly, the driver must present a valid credit card in his or her name when picking up the vehicle. There are some exceptions to these rules. For further details, please visit Alamo’s Driver’s License Policy page.

Planning to share driving duties during your vacation? Add a second driver for an average of $12 a day (exact cost varies by location), but make sure he or she also meets all of the requirements listed above.

Do you know where you’re going?
If so, then you’ll be ready to get on your merry way as soon as you start the engine. If not, consider renting one of Alamo’s GPS navigation devices, or a TravelTab device, which features unlimited 4G data service for up to five devices and includes voice-activated navigation and other travel tools. If you plan to drive on toll roads, you may also want to purchase a toll pass device/waiver. With the toll pass, you’ll be in the fast lane, free to breeze through tollbooths without slowing or worrying about finding exact change to pay. You’ll be billed separately for any tolls you drove through.

Car Rental Tips: Fastest and Easiest Way to Rent a Car

When it comes to family vacations, anything you can do to ensure a smooth trip — like picking up your rental car and getting on your way in minutes — is a must. Here are five tips to help you navigate the car rental process at Alamo with ease, so you can spend more time enjoying your vacation.

Skip the Counter with Online Check-In
At many of the most popular U.S airport locations, you can use Alamo.com’s Online Check-In to “Skip the Counter” and go straight to the rental lot to choose your vehicle. To get started, visit Alamo.com and fill out their Online Check-In form with your driver’s license information and confirmation number. You can then choose your driver preferences, such as GPS and car seat options. Handling all the details ahead of time means you’ll be on your way in no time when you arrive to pick up your car.

Visit the Kiosk
To streamline your rental experience, utilize an Alamo Self-Service Kiosk during check-in. The kiosk allows you to save time by skipping the rental counter. All you need to check in at the kiosk is your driver’s license and credit card. The kiosk also allows you to upgrade your vehicle, add drivers and purchase options. When you’re finished, just show your rental agreement and driver’s license at the exit booth before you hit the road.

Consider the Payment Method
When renting with Alamo, credit cards are usually the easiest form of payment. Just present a credit card with the renter’s name at the time of rental. In the U.S. you can pay with a debit card, but there are additional requirements, such as proof of your round-trip travel ticket.

A credit card in the renter’s name is also required to prepay online. When you prepay online at least 24 hours in advance, you’re eligible for a 5 percent discount.

Don’t Fuel Up When Returning the Rental Car
As a renter, you can choose to fuel up the vehicle before returning it or you can save time and avoid making an extra stop en route to the airport by pre-paying for fuel ahead of time. When you pay for a full tank of gas at the time of pickup, you can return the vehicle with an empty tank for no extra charge. You’ll save yourself a trip to the gas station, meaning there’s one less task standing between you and your journey home.

Get a Toll Pass
If you’re driving a lot during your trip, ask about Toll Pass when you pick up your rental. How does it work? When you drive on toll roads, the charges will automatically be applied to the card on file for the vehicle rental. This handy option saves you time because it allows you to breeze through tolls without stopping to pay.

Keep these five tips in mind, and you’ll navigate the rental process like a pro. Visit the their website HERE for more.
