VPNsecure.me Review : Is Legit or Scam? 2024

Is VPNsecure.me legit and safe? in this VPNsecure.me review, we show you if VPNsecure.me is safe. And also if VPNsecure.me legit, secure or scam, real or fake. VPNsecure.me complaints and feedback of members also reviewed.

What is VPNsecure.me?

VPNsecure.me is a VPN service provider that came onboard in 2010. Their catchy slogan is “secure networks”, and they say on their website that they take users’ privacy very seriously.

They rightfully say that everything you do online can be tracked, and they make all the right processes such as securing your digital life and giving you online privacy by securely encrypting your web traffic and concealing your IP address. They also add unblocking geo restricted contents and websites to what they’ll give you.

Their name shouts security, their slogan shouts security, and they talk security in all their promises. Does the service really give security and the other elements that we’ve come to expect of a modern VPN service?

This review will examine virtually everything about the VPNSecure.me service to provide the information to help you answer that question.

Is VPNsecure.me safe and legit?

VPNsecure.me is safe and legit to use. You have nothing to worry about your safety because  the vpn has a kill switch that stops your internet once the vpn disconnects. You can also cancel your subscription if you decide you are no more satisfied with the service.

Packages and pricing

Service Plans

VPNsecure.me offers a wide range of service plans. The standard plan  (called the OpenVPN plan) has three billing options – every month, every six months, and every twelve months.

First there is a 2 days paid trial account which cost $2.00. The one month package cost $9.95; the six months package is $49.95, which breaks down to $8.32 per month; the twelve months package is $79.95, which breaks down to $6.66 per month.

The longer term packages are always preferable to the shorter term packages because they will save you more. The six months billing is discounted by 16.4% and will save you about $19.5; while the twelve months package is discounted by 33% and will give a saving of $39.45. The twelve months deal is their best value deal.

Comparatively, the VPN services that are considered expensive have single months deal of about $10.00 and more; VPNsecure.me at $9.95 is trying hard to gate crash. Also, some of the similarly highly priced services have massive discounts (60% or more) that bring their best value deals to very low levels; but VPNSecure.me best deal because of being discounted by only 33% stand higher than most others.

Apart from the standard (OpenVPN) plan, VPNSecure.me has other service offerings – PPTP plan, SSH Plan, HTTP Proxy plan, and a Smarter DNS.

The PPTP plan is just like the standard VPN plan in that it encrypt all traffic and pass it through a secure channel; the difference is that VPN connection is established using the PPTP protocol which has weak encryption to make it insecure. However, when security and privacy is not a priority, the fast speed that the PPTP provides makes it a good choice for establishing connections.

SSH is an encrypted proxy, meaning it will create a secure tunnel only for the applications that you set up to use it with. A HTTP Proxy gives you no encryption, it simply acts as an intermediary between you and the Internet, and at best will only mask your IP address. The Smarter DNS also gives no encryption, and simply allows you to have access to geo restricted contents for your streaming pleasure.

Surprisingly, the pricing of the SSH Tunnel does not give it any advantage over the standard VPN Plan. It can be billed monthly at $9.95, every six months at $49.95, and every 12 months at $89.95.

As expected, the other service offerings are priced lower than the standard VPN Plan. PPTP Plan can be billed every month (at $7.95), every six months (at $39.95), and every twelve months (at $69.95). The HTTP Proxy has similar billing options – every month (at $4.95), every six months (at $24.95), and every twelve months (at $49.95). The Smarter DNS also has similar billing options – every month (at $4.95), every six months (at $25.00), and every twelve months  (at $45.00).

One important feature of VPNSecure.me that scores point for the service is Dedicated IPs. You can order Dedicated IPs from any 48 countries for your standard OpenVPN Plan, as well as the HTTP Proxy, and SSH Socks Tunnel account.

Generally, when you connect to a VPN, the virtual IP you are given is a shared IP which is given to other users. While this is good for anonymity, there at certain issues associated with shared IPs. For example, streaming services easily identify and block shared IPs used by many different users; many applications will flag your activity and request re-authentication every time you try to access them with a different IP; worst still, almost all online banking and payment processing sites will block you when you try accessing them with a different IP (thinking it’s someone else trying to access your account).

A dedicated private IP is used by only you and no else; thus you avoid all the problems associated with shared IPs. However, the dedicated IPs of VPNSecure.me does not come free as part of the VPN package, but comes as an add-on with some extra charge.

That is why the dedicated IPs is included here in the pricing section (and not in the features section) – it directly affects the price you pay for the VPNSecure.me service. The service supply from one to hundreds of private dedicated IPs. They also discount the offer depending on how many private IPs are ordered, and for how many months.

For example, if you need the add-on for only one month; one private IP will cost you $16.95, but 2, 3 and 4 private IPs will cost you $29.00, $40.95, and $49.95 respectively. Also, if only one private IP is needed, one month access as said is $16.95, but three months access is $40.95, 6 months access is $71.00, while 12 months access is $142.00.

Payment Methods

VPNsecure.me says “pay for your VPN your way”. The service supports both standard payments methods as well as anonymous methods.

You can pay for the service with Credit cards, PayPal, Payza, Perfect Money and CashU. This gives users a wide range of options; if your location does not support a particular payment method, you can conveniently use another.

However, many of these “convenient” payment methods entail submitting personal information  (such as name, credit card info and billing addresses); and there are many users that would rather not use these payment methods saying that such submissions can turn around to threaten their privacy. VPNSecure.me will appeal to such privacy conscious users because the service allows you to make payment anonymously with bitcoin.

Refund policy

VPN service providers always communicate that they are interested more in your satisfaction than your money. They do this by offering money back guarantees that allow you to request a refund of your payment if you are not satisfied with their service.

VPNsecure.me offers such a guarantee. Theirs is a seven days money back guarantee; which means that you can only request a refund within 7 days of using the service.

However, Secure.me does not give the “no questions asked” unlimited guarantee that we would love; theirs come with several clauses.

Their website list the requirements that you must meet to be eligible for a refund. Apart from the regulars  (such as not being eligible if you do not apply within the allowed window, or if your account was deliberately disable because of fraud), there are others that might concern many users. These include:

  • You have contacted support and gone through troubleshooting“.
  • “We will not refund under any circumstances if a particular site or service on the internet does not work, we cannot control what is outside the realm of our VPN network.”

These two conditions effectively rule out using the money back guarantee to test run the seven free of charge. This is because it means that to get a refund from Secure.me something must go wrong with the service itself, and you must have reached out to support for assistance but still could not get it working smoothly.

This refund policy really count against the Secure.me service, because there are some exceptional services in the market that give money back guarantees with much longer refund window  (some up to 30 days), and without any limiting clauses.

Free trial

To excel in any competitive market, it is imperative to employ strategies that will keep you on top of others. One way VPNs do this is by offering no-risk free trial accounts that give users some days access to all the features that the paid package possess.

VPNsecure.me offers a 30 days free trial account. It is said that free things purges in reference to the fact that free services are restricted in one way or the other. True to that, VPNSecure.me free trial has a 2GB data limit, and gives access to only one VPN server in the US.

Their website states that the free trial account works with all the major devices: “your Desktop or your Mobile device whether it’s Android or iOS, Windows, MacOs and Linux“. However, it would appear that the free VPN account works only on Windows.

To fully test the VPNSecure.me service, the 2 days paid package will serve you better. Though it will set you back by $2.00 and will use only the protocol of the service plan you want to purchase, it allows access to all the servers with unlimited switches, and it’s also compatible with all devices.

VPNsecure.me Features

Ease of use

Truthfully, a VPN service nomatter how good will not do much good if it cannot be used of if it will require some tech degree to be used.

VPNsecure.me aced all simplicity checks. It’s a breeze to sign up, download the app, install it, and log in. Go to their website; select the device you want to install; download VPNSecure.me software; click OpenVPN Client, then “save”; continue through the Set-up Wizard, click “Install”; Click “Install” again, then “Finish”; launch the service by double-clicking on the VPNSecure.me icon on your device or desktop; click “Login”, enter your  username and password, then “sign In”.

The interface that greets you is well designed and simple to navigate. The interface shows different server locations for you to choose from. You can simply select the location you wish to connect to, then click “Connect”. The interface also shows your location and IP address (real or virtual) depending on your connection status.

You can also easily navigate to enable basic settings such as enable auto connect, change encryption level etc. On the whole, the VPNsecure.me app is intuitive and simple to use.

Device compatibility

It is ideal for a VPN to support a variety of devices, so that you can use the service nomatter your device.

VPN Secure.me is compatible with a wide range of devices – Windows (10, 8, 7, Vista , XP), MacOS (Apple Mac), Linux (Ubuntu, Fedora and more), IOS (iPad, iPhone, iTouch), and Android.

This means that you can use VPNSecure.me with computers (desktops and laptops) and also with mobile devices  (tablets and smartphones). This is excellent because users do most of their browsing on mobile devices; and so seek services that are compatible with both desktop and mobile devices. That’s why it is a drawback that the Secure.me service’s free package supports only Windows; those with smartphones and iPads that would want to test the service free of charge will be left out.

You can also configure the service on routers (DD-WRT router, Tomato routers, Asus WRT router and more). They also sell pre configured routers.

Simultaneous connections

Individuals usually have many devices that may be in use at the same time. Some families might decide to subscribe to one VPN account and may want to secure all the devices in the family unit with one VPN account so as to save cost.  As a result, they go for VPN services that allow users to connect multiple devices to one account at the same time.

The good news is that VPNsecure.me allows five simultaneous connections, so it will be an ideal service for those that want to secure multiple devices with one account.

Many services allow only single connections, while some others allow only up to three simultaneous connections. Therefore, VPNSecure.me offer of five is a very generous offer, that only few services can beat.

VPN Package

There are many proxy services and Smart DNS services that people subscribe to. VPNSecure.me also offers an independent Proxy service and a Smart DNS, but their standard Plan includes the HTTP Proxy and the Smarter DNS free of charge.

This is a big advantage if you’ll rather forego encryption and simply have access to geo restricted contents.

Streaming

VPNsecure.me offer of a Smarter DNS and a HTTP Proxy shows that the service can be used to have access to geographical restricted websites and streaming services. This streaming capability is further enhanced by the unlimited bandwidth made available by the service.

Using the VPNsecure.me service you can stream and watch contents from top streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, HBo Go, Pandora and others.

This easily makes Secure.me an excellent service for streaming. Netflix access alone is an identifier of a great streaming service. This is because, the streaming giant has effectively blocked VPNs from helping users beat its geo restrictions, and it is rare to see VPN services that gives access to Netflix vast library.

That said, if you want a VPN service for streaming; you should grab a bowl of popcorn and the VPNsecure.me service.

Torrenting

Torrenting is one of the major reasons people seek VPN services. This is because torrenting is one of the fastest ways of obtaining large files in the internet; but it involves connecting to a group of people, and this connection can expose one to attacks from insidious peers in the network. VPN cover allows you download torrents safely and anonymously, protected from insidious peers and more.

The good news is that VPNSecure.me supports P2P activity and torrenting. This will really draw a lot of the torrenting crowd to them. Also, while many of the other services that support torrenting limit the activity to only a few servers, VPNsecure.me allows torrenting on 90% of their servers. You can download torrents with even servers in the US and UK (the activity is blocked in only two of their UK servers and one of US server).

Overall, with unlimited bandwidth, and P2P activity allowed on many servers; the VPNSecure.me service comes out as an ideal service for downloading torrents safely and anonymously.

Stealth

When using a VPN, your data is encrypted. Watching eyes cannot know what you are transmitting but will still know that you are using a VPN. In regions with strong internet censorship, this can be a problem. The government do not like that VPNs help users beat internet restrictions, so they identify and block VPN traffic with deep packet inspection (DPI). This is why some VPNs do not work is places like China.

Thankfully, VPNsecure.me offers obfuscation (Stealth VPN) to help users beat deep packet inspection. The stealth VPN obfuscate VPN traffic making it resemble normal web traffic, so it slips through the firewall and allowed to pass through the network.

If you are (or will find youself) in a heavily restricted region, the VPNSecure.me service will be an ideal choice to still have online freedom.

Servers locations

VPNsecure.me has seventy seven (77) servers located in forty eight (48) countries. Considering that some services operate hundreds and thousands of servers, VPNsecure.me 77 servers is on the low side; however, the servers are hosted in an impressive 48 countries and also widely distributed (spreading across all the regions of the world even the areas that are often ignored by most VPN industries).

They have servers in Africa, Europe, Asia, Oceania, South America, North America, and central America. The African region is represented by South Africa and Egypt. Europe has good representation which includes the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Finland, Czech, Austria, Germany, Ireland, Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania, Switzerland, Poland, Italy. Asia is represented by Hong kong, Japan, India, Israel, Singapore, Isreal, Taiwan and Turkey. Oceania is represented by Australia, and New Zealand. South America is represented by Chile and Brazil. North America is represented by United states, Canada and Mexico. Panama and Costa Rica represents Central America.

This wide global coverage ensures that any part of the world you are, you will have a nearby VPNsecure.me server to connected to for optimal performance.

Privacy and security features

VPN protocols and Encryption

VPNsecure.me supports OpenVPN, PPTP, and SSH tunnel. However, all protocols are not available in any one service plan. The plan you subscribed to determines the protocol that is available for you to establish your connection.

The OpenVPN is the most secure protocol, and VPNsecure.me on their website strongly recommends it saying: “VPN (OpenVPN) is the recommended VPN protocol and service for our users. It provides various features that other protocol’s cannot provide such as choosing an encryption level, protecting against DNS Leaks, while enjoying speed and stability.”

In terms of encryption, the VPNSecuee standard OpenVPN plan offers three different kinds of encryption: AES-256, AES-128, and DES-CBC.

AES encryptions are high grade encryption. You can also upgrade or downgrade depending  on your security needs and your location. The 256 bit encryption algorithm is the standard used by the military and banks. Needless to say, this is because it is very secure.

The bottom line is, your data over the VPNsecure.me network is nigh unhackable.

Kill switch

VPNsecure.me offers a kill switch. This is a feature that ensures that internet traffic is stopped when the VPN connection drops thereby preventing the exposure of your traffic (which will then be unencrypted) and your real IP.

This feature is a must have for optimal security because without it all the good work of encrypting data and masking real IP will come to nothing with a VPN connection drop. Note that, connection drops are inevitable because no VPN (or any piece of technology) has a 100% uptime.

Thankfully, the VPNsecure.me service has a kill switch. This feature could be the difference between freedom and prosecution (possible prison term or worse) for torrenters or users in a country with strict censorship laws; because when a user thinks he/ she is protected, an abrupt disconnection could put the person in danger by revealing his/ her online activities and location to the monitoring authorities.

Security leaks protections

Preventing others from seeing your online activities is the primary reason for using a VPN. Even with solid encryption and a kill switch for protection during the VPN downtime, your online activity and location can still spill to third parties via leaks.

This can take the form of IP/ DNS leaks  (when IP/ DNS traffic leaves the VPN tunnel to the default connection) or WebRTC leaks (public IP addresses (IPv4 or IPv6) leaking through the browser’s WebRTC functionality). Leaks makes user’s online activity and location visible to the user’s ISP, and every other concerned party.

Top VPNs will have leak protections built in, and you won’t have anything to worry about. Thankfully, VPNSecure.me put itself among the top services by having different leak protections which ensures that users’ online activity and real IP are not exposed to unwanted third party.

Logging

According to the VPNsecure.me service website, one feature of the service is “No Logs Ever”. In their words: “We do not log any personal information when connecting to our service“.

These are good statements that should assure privacy because log keeping threatens privacy. However, because of the record of some services who keep logs while claiming to be no-logs services, we dig deeper into a VPN s’ privacy policy before accepting their front-page no-log claims.

In their privacy policy, VPNsecure.me explains that they do not keep “any data” which includes: IP Address, connection timestamp, disconnect timestamp, bandwidth used, DNS Requests, or the websites you visit.

This covers the two categories – activity logs and connection logs. This scores a lot of point for the VPNSecure.me service. A lot of services that claims no-logs actually keep connection logs such as bandwidth usage and connection timestamps. VPNsecure.me frequently says “We take your privacy very seriously“, and they’ve shown this by not storing the often stored connection logs.

They even say they’ll change location, if their current location make moves that make it difficult for them to uphold users’ privacy – “If required we will move jurisdictions and go above and beyond for you.

However the service stores email address, username, and password of users. It can be argued that many of the services that cater to paranoid users do not require any personal information that can identify a user (not even an email address); but it should be noted that you can simply use an anonymous/ disposable email when registering for the VPNSecure.me service, and your privacy will not be compromised. Also, the stored passwords  are encrypted using AES 2048 bit encryption.

Jurisdiction

VPNsecure.me is located in Australia. A VPN’s location affect its security rating because, as a legal entity, every service provider is subject to the laws of the land where they reside.

Unfortunately, Australia is among the most regulated countries in the world. They are also a member of the one of the fourteen eyes countries – an international surveillance alliance where member countries work together to collect and share mass surveillance data.

Australia has implemented some alarming data retention laws. One such laws allows the  tapping and storing of telephone conversation and internet data for up to six months.

This means that the Secure.me service may be unable to stop the local government from getting to users’ data. Also, users’ data tapped in Australia might get shared across the world among the intelligence agencies of the Fourteen Eyes surveillance network as part of their intelligence sharing agreement.

This is a drawback of the VPNsecure.me service; privacy conscious VPN user will go for the services that are in countries with friendly privacy laws and outside the notorious Eyes surveillance alliances. The one goodnews is that since VPNsecure.me is true to their zero log policy, there will be little or no data to be captured by these third parties.

Speed

Speed is a major concerns of VPN users. VPN Use reduce network speed, but no user wants the frustrating experience of speeds reduced to intolerable levels. The best (fast) VPNs will have minimal/ indecipherable impact on browsing speed.

Every single VPN in the market compliments their connection speeds, so it was not surprising that VPNsecure.me say they have fast connection speed.

So I tested to know how fast they really are. I recorded the speed of four different servers (2 near ones and two distant ones), averaged the result, and compared it to speed recorded when the VPN is disconnected.

On the average, VPNSecure.me reduced download speed and upload speed by 58% and 52% respectively. Though, this isn’t a bad performance, it isnt great either. The speed difference between the fast servers and the slow servers was alarming, and might just turn off users that are concerned about consistent speeds.

However, on the whole, VPNsecure.me offer serviceable speeds that will allow you do virtually anything online without any interruption.

Customer support

VPNSecure provides customer support through two channels – email and live chat. The live chat is usually effective and provides instant responses to inquiries. When I contacted them using the live chat there was no delay in getting a response which appeared well thought. Their live chat is among the first things you see immediately you enter the site. It scores point for the service because users like instant response channels; and not many services offer these.

They also provide a knowledgebase for self help. The knowledgebase of other services I have reviewed hold articles that provides answers to most troubleshooting and technical issues, but the knowledgebase of VPNSecure.me holds more of tutorials for manually setting up the service on the supported devices. I don’t know if I didn’t search well, but I didn’t see any FAQ section. I’ll have to say I didn’t search well enough (though I did all the searching possible), because it beats me that a VPN service will not have a section that gives answers to some of the basic questions that users would have about the service.

It’s said that “variety is the spice of life”. It will be an added advantage if the service will provides other options for getting help such as telephone service.

Summary

The slogan of the VPNSecure.me service is “secure networks”. They couldn’t be more apt. The service gives top notch security and privacy.

VPNsecure.me provides virtual encrypted tunnel between users and remote server operated; their standard OpenVPN Plan use strong protocol with unhackable encryption, there is a kill switch, and built-in leaks protection, and they offer a stealth VPN to bypass the strictest of firewalls.

Their only security weakness would be that they are located in Australia that’s got some anti-privacy laws and in bed with a spy network; but even this weakness is tempered by the fact that the service truly does not keep logs.

The service is excellent for torrenting and streaming, and also offers dedicated private IPs (though as a paid add-on) that would give a smooth online experience. I wouldn’t forget to add that the service has intuitive apps that makes it easy to use.

Their major drawbacks include: inconsistent speed and too few servers in their network. Other minor annoyances will include: having complicated packages outside the VPN standard plan, having a money back guarantee that has unfriendly clauses, having a free trial that didnt work with mobile devices, and not having an FAQ section.
